Sony is making efforts to combat President Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports' potential impacts on the availability of the PlayStation 5 by shipping more stock to the United States and ramping up manufacturing in Japan.
U.S. President Donald Trump has implemented a 10% tariff on all goods from China being imported into the United States in order to promote manufacturing in America, per his statements. This means that goods coming from China in the U.S. will cost more so companies don't lose profit from the tariffs.
Given that a huge number of electronics are made in Chinese factories, experts warn that electronics in the U.S. could get a lot more expensive, and that includes gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 5. The tariffs could also have a negative effect on the availability of the console.
To prevent the tariffs from impacting PlayStation customers in America, Sony will be "stockpiling a certain level of strategic inventory in the U.S." and moving some of its manufacturing to Japan, where there aren't tariffs. Through these measures, Sony can ensure PS5 remains available in the U.S. and maintain low prices.
Sony expects the move to have a minor effect on its earnings this year.
